Activities run by ATC

Flying

We go to RAF Cosford and Turnhill to train our cadets to fly small training aircrafts which is the Grob tutor. Initially you will fly the aircraft with an instructor, during this time you will learn the basic controls of the air craft and familiarise yourself with the controls and instruments. Once they have gained an understanding of how to fly an aircraft they may like to perform aerobatics such as:

  • Loops

  • Barrel roles

  • Stall turns

  • Split

  • Half Mexican

  • Half Cuban

Flying scholarships can be taken once you are 17 and passed the senior classification, you may apply at 16 and a half years old. There are 2 types of scholarships, AEF and Pilot Scheme. Both consist of 12 hrs flying with the Pilot Scheme culminating in going solo.

To start flying you must be 13 and have passed basic familiarisation training to fly the Grob Tutor which is the aircraft that you fly in the ATC.

Gliding

There are two types of gliding within the ATC powered and non-powered gliding. Non-powered gliding is done in the Viking which has no engine and is launched from either a ground based winch or towed by another aircraft to sawing height.

You have to be 14 to glide; we glide in various locations. Further to this there is the possibility to undertake a gliding scholarship. To do so you must be 16 and a minimum of Leading Classification.

Adventure Training

Adventure Training is one of the most popular activities amongst Air Cadets.

The ATC has two Air Cadet Adventure Training Centres in Llanbedr in Snowdonia, Wales and in the Lake District, Cumbria, at Windermere. Cadets that attend these centres can experience rock-climbing, abseiling, canoeing, high-ropes, hill-walking and more.

The ATC places a lot of emphasis on skills such as leadership, teamwork and initiative. Each squadron runs their own extensive training in these areas, but Air Cadets can also apply to attend the highly sought after Cadet Leadership Courses at RAF Cranwell and Frimley Park, which are week-long. There you can learn more skills to make you a confident leader, and put them into practical use with other cadets from all over the United Kingdom. Cadets that successfully complete these courses gain the Air Cadet Leadership badge

Shooting

There is a keen intrest in shooting within the air cadets and we have two main weapons which are used frequently.

The .22 rifle is the first weapon you will handle because it is a very simple weapon to operate as a cadet getting used to the weapon. The L98 A2, semi automatic rifle will be the second weapon you will have a chance to use.

Before you use any of the weapons you will have a number of lessons that consist of safety and features of the rifles. Before you get your hands on any of the rifles you will have to do a weapon handling test which ensures your competent with the use of the rifle. After you have done the above you will get the chance to fire the rifle and if you wish you can go forward to do marksman qualification; of which there are four different levels:

  • Squadron
  • Wing
  • Region
  • Corps

Duke of Edinburgh Award

In the Air Cadets we get the opportunity to do the Duke of Edinburgh award consisting of Bronze, Silver and Gold. This award is a great opportunity; it will give you the skills and confidence to perform individual and within a team. Also providing your future college, universities and employers with the evidence of yours skills and qualities. You will make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime. For each programme you finish you will receive a badge to wear proudly on your uniform!.

Bronze

The first step of DofE is bronze where you have to be at least 14 to start the DofE programme.

Silver

Next is silver, you need to be at least 15 to start doing your Silver DofE programme.

If you start the Silver without doing Bronze first you will have to do an extra six months volunteering or the other sections in your DofE programme.

Gold

Once you hit 16 you can do your Gold DofE programme.

If you have jumped straight into your Gold DofE programme you will need to do a further six months either volunteering or the other sections in DofE programme.

The big difference of Gold is you will have to do a Residential – staying away from home for five days and four nights doing a shared activity with people that you are unfamilar with. For more information click on the link.

Camps

There are lots of different types of camps here in the ATC; Greens, annual, overseas and many more. You will meet people from all over the country and make  new friends that will stay with you throughout your life.

A greens camp can range from just a weekend exercise with your squadron to a week jam packed full of field craft, shooting and military skills.  You will learn how to do camouflage and concealment, leadership and initiative skills, shooting and marksmen, tactical and scenario evaluations and much more. These are great camps if you love being outside and if your full of energy; it is both mental and physically challenging and will give you opportunities you can’t get from anywhere else.

Annual camps, whether this is an Easter, Summer or Autumn camp, you will be in for a treat. Staying on a RAF base for a week, you will learn how to keep your room and person tidy at all times. You'll have the opportunity to fly at local bases, shoot and obtain your marksman, evening exercises and high ropes. These are weeks that you do not want to miss out on!!

Overseas

There are many overseas camps that you can also go on with in the Air cadets. Whether this is an exchange to America, Canada or even Australia or normal camps to:

  • Akrotiri on Cyprus. A 10 day camp over the Easter school holiday period and at select other times of the year.

  • RAF Gibraltar in Gibraltar.

  • JHQ Rheindahlen in Germany
